Title: Firefall
Post by: Pvt. Grichmann on September 16, 2010, 03:37:16 PM
So, apparently this thing was announced at PAX or something. Here's the site: http://www.firefallthegame.com/

Here's what the site blurb says about it:
"Earth will never be the same. After the Crystite Wars, humanity inadvertently invited the worst enemy ever conceived: THE MELDING. It surrounds us. It forces us to live in pockets of land protected only by the accidental discovery of repulsor technology. We continue to fight for land. For technology. For power. For our very survival. JOIN THE FIGHT.

FIREFALL is a team-based action shooter. Join your friends in an epic online campaign across a vast open world to stop the Melding and fight for the survival of humanity against the army of the Chosen. Advance your army and character through technological upgrades. Level up different character classes. Compete for supremacy in various multiplayer game types. Push back the Melding. SAVE EARTH"

They have a teaser trailer and a gameplay trailer, and from what I can make of them, it's a shooter MMO that's somewhat like a more action-based TR that doesn't seem to take itself too seriously. A bit cartoony for my taste, but at least it's not brown. Looks good overall.

Oh, and some info tells it's going to be free to play. I haven't found a confirmation, but that's one more thing to consider.

Are there Rocket-Launchers ingame? If not -> no interest.

Post by: Pvt. Grichmann on September 16, 2010, 08:14:46 PM
I'll assume yes, because a futuristic shooter without a rocket launcher makes no sense. There wasn't one in the trailer, though, but there was a blaster-like thing.

That is totally a Borderlands MMO with a bit of GA armor design and third person game play, but first person game play as well.
No marks for originality, but better plagiarized properly then conceived crappy, it looks like a lot of fun as borderlands was a lot of fun!
Thanks for the heads up Grichman, this is one worth keeping track of.

They also said that they intend to make "large, open worlds" or something to that effect rather than putting their players in instances, which scores a ton of extra points with me (Okay, technically, it gets no penalty with me, but should you care?). Kind of what I expected from GA, to be honest.

Probably the only thing seen in the trailer that bothers me was that one of the bugs near the end of that Thumper sequence dropped an equipment piece. Goddomot, I hate monsters dropping gear.

Goddomot, I hate monsters dropping gear.

Wasn't that the reason you played TR? Thrax dropping 1337 lewt!

Nah, I played for all the shootan, explodan (When crab mines finally figure out how to run towards the nearest Thrax) and out of hope I'll eventually get my yellow submarine PAU.

Ah ... Crab Mines ... memories come up :). Crab Mines + Controlled Fission + Explosive Nanites ... ah those delightful explosions. Nanites were so underrated ...

Anyways, will keep an eye on that one.

I've started mining for info. Here's two FAQ threads with some interesting stuff that makes the game look absolutely delicious:
http://www.firefallthegame.com/forums/showthread.php?4-Frequently-Asked-Questions-Updated-9-6-2010
http://www.firefallthegame.com/forums/showthread.php?973-A-Compilation-of-Questions-Answered-by-the-Devs-Part-2

Particularly this bit:
"The world is full of dynamic events. The attack on Dredge that we showed at PAX was another dynamic event. Normally, Dredge is not under attack. It's a perfectly peaceful town, but due to it's location and the valuable resources that are mined there, the town can come under attack by the Chosen.
...

Other missions are based on time of day, time of week, time of year, or even player actions. We are trying very hard to make the open-world feel like a living and breathing place where things happen and you have the chance to make a difference."

A dev quote:
"I really can't believe the game isn't even in beta yet and Crater's [an ability demonstrated in the trailer] already been renamed to "buttstomp." I guess I should cherish the time left before it starts getting called that in the office..."

Looks like Borderlands, just other setting, and a bit less comicstyle, except the character.

ZOMG! First and Last Pic looks like Concordia Wilderness!!!!! (or Foreas in general)  ;D I will check that game out ! Yeah its quite comicstyle, but I can live with that.

I just watched the Gameplay Trailer .... it looks pretty neat! I really like the flying scene ... if this is really a large open world .... that would be not bad.

Beta registrations are now open!
http://www.firefallthegame.com/forums/register.php

I declared you to be my referrer Pvt. Grichmann, thanks for telling me about what might turn out to be extremely awesome.

Post by: Pvt. Grichmann on September 29, 2010, 02:30:21 PM
Well, it isn't really beta registration, it's just for the forum - but they'll be picking beta apps from a mix of the most active/involved and completely random forumites, as far as I know, when the time comes (Supposedly somewhere next year, my Sharp Analytical Mindô says February)
Title: Re: Firefall
Post by: Mironov on September 29, 2010, 06:20:35 PM
The game seems like took ideas from other games. nothing original, but gameplay seems fun enough. If it were started at the time of GA, i would join in , but as it gets released in 2011, when SWTOR comes out then the choice is obvious :)

The last part in a gameplay where the base shootout is shown, is it a pve or pvp event?

I might check it then the open beta starts but that is all.
Title: Re: Firefall
Post by: Pvt. Grichmann on September 29, 2010, 06:26:25 PM
PvE is the main focus of the game, and everything shown so far is PvE.

Post by: Tilarta on October 21, 2010, 09:34:20 AM
It looks like a fun game.

Of course, I won't actually have a real opinion until I've tried it personally.
Lately, I've been making the mistake of looking cool=good gameplay.

I like the general concept, but those backpacks are wierd to me.
I've always favored slimline equipment.
It looks like they're running around with a nuclear reactor on their back.

My crab mines never seemed to have problems with targeting the enemies, they seemed smarter then everyone elses for some reason.
Nanites and controlled fission were also favorites of mine.

I wander, why a cell shading technology suddenly become so popular?

But ye, seems fun enough :)

In the following video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuuBUFPZ-UY) a dev at the end said that when the game will be released it will be free to play and free to download. Would be interesting to see they f2p model

ye saw that vid, will be interesting indeed, I would however not have anything against a monthly sub for it though :P since it looks like a good replacement for TR.

Yeah, but they do say they'll have a fair item shop.

And the lead designer is the lead designer from Tribes 1 and 2, so they're covered there.

I have played Tribes 2 in offline mode with bots( at that time an internet connection for me was an unreachable luxury :) ), a gameplay was subpar, compared to Unreal or Quake of that time. hope they learned on they mistakes

You MUST update tribes 2, it wasn't working entirely correctly at the initial release.
Which I agree is kind of hard to do without an internet connection.
But trust me, once updated the gameplay had a flow to it that (as far as I know) has been surpassed only by halo in how satisfying it was.
It was also very popular with modders, that improved on an already good game, adding great variety to anyone's T2 experience.

... ah, how I miss the days when I could go from 0 to 2000 points in a single run with a good pilot for the bomber. Or when that team killer went complaining in the chat about not being able to kill me even though he surprised me 2 out of 3 attempts. ;D

Tribes Starsiege (1) was moderately revolutionary for its time, but other than that I don't get why people think so highly of it.
Title: Re: Firefall
Post by: Pvt. Grichmann on November 04, 2010, 09:08:48 PM
Tribes 2 is free now, and people still seem to play: http://www.tribesnext.com/
Might want to give it a try. For me, I'm afraid that whole 1999-2002 early 3D period in games just doesn't work. Of course there are exceptions, but generally I can't get into a game I didn't play at that time. The sad thing is, it's the graphics. They simply haven't aged well.

In case you were wondering, there's already a sizeable thread (http://www.firefallthegame.com/forums/showthread.php?2091-Hi-Rez-Studios-(Global-Agenda)-buys-the-Tribes-franchise-makes-Tribes-Universe-MMOFPS) about it on the Firefall forum. General opinion is that HiRez won't be able to make a good game after how bad GA is. These people greatly underestimate the ability some people have to learn from their mistakes.

Cool, i just found out about this game (and made a thread about it). It looks fun and reminds me a bit of TR. Mainly because its a sci-fi shooter and there are trees. I applied for beta and hopefully it's a worthy game

Yep, have applied to beta for it as well, but if it sticks to its guns of being F2P and Free to buy, looks most interesting indeed.

Go check your mail if you were registered. Beta's started, with those with more powerful rigs getting into it sooner. You'll need to confirm your participation, upload your hardware specs, sign the NDA, and pray.
Title: Re: Firefall
Post by: Pvt. Grichmann on August 09, 2012, 07:33:59 AM
Here's an update (Totally forgot to post when the NDA was lifted): Firefall received a huge patch yesterday. Basically, everything's changed, including the way you advance and get new upgrades (No more levels), the way abilities work, abilities themselves, weapons, speed of everything, the equipment system, the way you craft things. Hell, they've changed the Medic battleframe entirely into a Biotech that is no longer a healbot.
Unfortunately, it also overloaded the server and crashed the AI, so it is unplayable at the moment and I can't tell anything about how the new gameplay feels.

Also, apparently no more character wipes.

Kapow!   Firefall is Free 2 Play!  the ad on Steam read....    So I figured... what's the harm, is free!   So I installed the client, created an account, made a Character (I go by Luca Loquax) and logged in.  I am happy to say I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of a F2P and was able to gear-up and start fighting almost immediately.

Like TaRa there are 'safe' rear areas and wilderness to venture out into to make your fortune and bonk some heads.  Firefall has its share of similarities as well as its own charm and I have even met a few TaRa vets.   :)  Like all F2Ps they charge for for everything but the basic game which is fine with me because it worx just fine on its own.  I have been playing for two weeks now and I bought a premium starter kit because I want to support its continuing operation.

I give Firefall a thumbs up.   :)

Oh, and what is the most coveted pick-up in all the game....?    Purps!  Yay!

Oh my Dog I miss thrax-spanking, though....   -L

Title: Re: Firefall

Weh. They made a few changes to the game at release, essentially taking out everything unique and interesting it had. Now it's so bland, generic and unfulfilling I cannot recommend it at all. Honestly, it doesn't seem to do anything that Warframe, Defiance and GW2 aren't doing already - and they're doing it better. So the only thing Firefall still has going for it is the lore, and even that happens mostly around the game, not in it.

Warframe?  Ooooooo tell me more!
Title: Re: Firefall
Post by: Pvt. Grichmann on October 27, 2014, 09:14:03 PM
Warframe's a difficult game for me to talk about. I'm enjoying it, but it's too grindy and generally flawed to recommend. It's free, so I can't really discourage anyone from giving a try, either. Thing is, it's got major flaws all the way from low-level controls to high-level customisation, balancing and player interaction. Those make it a very inconsistent experience that's hard to get into.

They seem to be fixing those flaws, but they're not very quick about it - although I like the direction the game's heading in. It's kind of a shooty, slashy, occasionally stealthy co-op deal, but it has some major vertical progression, and co-op is largely enforced by making every enemy beefier. On the other hand, the current metagame is basically focused on finding a way to break the game over your knee. Spamming ultimate abilities, building overpowered guns, finding ways to never run out of energy, that kind of stuff. Not that you have to do any of that, but there's a lot of it going on.

But the core gameplay and the aesthetics are cool. Can't go wrong with magical space ninjas.

Definitely worth a look, but the game expects at least hour-long sessions and can eat a lot of your time. On the bright side, it's fairly cheap: the only things you really need to buy are slots for new weapons and warframes. The currency for those can be traded from other players if you can be bothered.

Anything in particular you want to hear about?

Last month they did the big, long-awaited 1.6 patch of FireFall and I am nothing but confused.  I am no stranger to the dev/deploy gig and I swear that *SOMEONE* with the authority to do so proclaimed that 1.6 was being pushed on THIS date come hell or high-water, ready or not.   Half the stuff in the game is broken, stuff that used to work just fine and the new stuff is just... strange.

I am hanging in there in hopes that the DEVs get ahead of this madness but, damn, they seemed to have sucked all of the fun out of it.

Stay tuned.    -L

We still doing Overwatch. All kinds of players play it, not only "13 years olds". Also not all heroes there require a good twitching skills.
Here are 8 heroes that don't requre you to be good at aiming - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHGSstdYq1A
Add to this list Ripper. He has a pair of shotguns, which have a big spread radius, doing a huge damage up close and in medium range but fall short at a long range. Just shoot in a general direction of your target and you are good. His all skills require no aiming whatsoever.
