Short Story - Regrets?
« on: November 06, 2007, 01:06:03 AM »
"Terradon, where you headed?" asked the young Corporal.

He was a decent kid of about 25, Tyler was his name. Been following me around since I saved his neck outside the Foreas Base. I told him, that it would be best to stay clear of me, only bad things could come of it. So far, he had been in the base hospital 5 times. Each time, I tell him that it is safer to stay clear. Does he listen? No.

"Over to Orthos Control Point, Bane have been pounding them hard the past few days. You aren't planning on tagging along are you?" I ask, already knowing the answer.

"Sure, I'm game." he responds just as I anticipated.

"Terr, the LZ is hot as Hell, you sure you want me to set down inside? The Forcefields are down and Bane are running amok." Armands voice crackled through the intercom.

I chambered a charge into my Photonic Shotgun and charged my Graviton Armor up.

"Just touch and go, I'll be the only one getting off until the defenses are back up." Is my reply.

"What about us? Yells Tyler over din of engines and the battle below, referring to himself and his squad.

"You'll have your chance, just let me thin them out a bit." I said.

The dropship came in low taking several hits, as I jumped. Time to exercise, I thought. I hit the ground running, pumping five blasts into a Kael. As the hulk of the Kael hit the ground, I heard a familiar cry for help. It was Tyler, a Thrax had him by the neck. Damned kid, never would listen.

Maybe, one more time. Maybe, I can do this. I energized a Rushing Blow, hitting the Thrax under his Right Arm, crushing his Carapace. Tyler was silent. The Battle was still going full on, but at least the Force Fields were back up.

"Tyler, you okay?" No answer. I yelled for a Medic.

I turned my attention to the Bane Medico. My Shotgun made short work of him and his Thrax patient. Two more Kael and couple of Hunters with their Howler pets met the same fate. The battle was all but over. Three AFS Mechs Dropped in and began clean up operations.

I went to where Medic Bond was working on Tyler.

"How is he?" I ask.

"His neck is broken, but he will live. I can't tell, how bad it is, but he can't move his limbs. I've got to get him to the Hospital in Foreas. Hopefully they will be able to help him." she stated.

"Armand, get the hell down here." I called on Radio.

"What's up, Sarge?" he replied.

"It's Tyler, get him and the rest of the wounded to Irendas, I'll be staying here until the base is reinforced." I responded.

That was nine weeks ago. I still go see Tyler once a week. He still can't move his arms or legs. He still thanks me for "saving his bacon". Does he even realize that it was my brash attack that crippled him. Would he even care.

I once read, "With great power, comes great responsibility" I don't want that responsibilty.

"Hey Sarge, Bane are moving on Orthos again, we need you." The voice on the Radio chimed.

This time will be different, I chamber a fresh Charge and Energize my Graviton.

"How long to drop?" I ask.

Yes, this time will be different.

I'm glad. I guess that most people aren't into immersion. Oh well. I'll work on a few more.

Well, I submitted it, no response, and it didn't show up in the Soul of a Soldier... either I didn't format it right, or they didn't like it.
